Excerpt snippet #12 Dec 7

His eyes widened. It wasn’t disbelief I saw in his blue-gray depths. It was acceptance.

I let out a relieved sigh. He didn’t think I was crazy. Still, my head was spinning. Time travel? Maybe I was dreaming.

What do we have here?” a male asked from behind us.

I turned in King Roan’s arms.

Another man, one just as handsome as the king, entered, his eyes lighting up. “Who is this dark-skinned beauty?”

I had to bite my lip to make sure I wasn’t stuck in a dream.

The sharp sting burned my eyes.

Queridos dioses. I wasn’t dreaming.

Excerpt snippet #11 Nov. 30

Since my bandmates and I had gotten different rune tattoos that had mystical powers while on tour in Romania about seven years ago from an old gypsy witch, tattoos we hadn’t chosen, we’d had to fumble our way through our new shared destiny. We’d only recently learned that we were supposed to be trained. I guessed it was my turn to face my destiny, and listening to my gut seemed to be the best way to cope. Right now, my intuition urged me to be honest.

I looked up at him and whispered, “I-I’m from the future.”

Then, I cringed and braced myself for his reaction, which could be harmful for me, though my gut and my tingling Gateway rune told me time travel wasn’t too far out of the realm of belief for these elven-like beings.

King Roan narrowed his eyes at me.

A sudden stab of dread pierced my gut like a cold blade. “I-I’m sorry. What year is this?”

The king sneered. “The Christian monks call it the year of our lord 450.”

I gasped, struggling to breathe, and staggered right into the king’s arms. When the commander tried to intervene, the king waved him off and steadied me with his strong embrace. He smelled of sandalwood and sweet woodland herbs, and my body tingled, my knees trembling.

Living with a Muse

I’ve heard other writers talk about their Muses as if they actually exist. I never gave it much thought before, but now I’m beginning to believe in my Muse.

The ancient Greeks believed in Muses and even had names for them. The ancient Celts had Brigit, a goddess of inspiration. The Norse god Odin was considered a god of poetry and wisdom. This belief in Muses is evident in every culture so there must be some truth in it, some basis for these beliefs to grow.

The way my writing comes and goes makes me think there might be a force behind my creativity. Some days I can’t think of one word to write, while on other days, I can’t stop the flow of ideas. I think I have a Muse, one that is capricious. Somehow I need to learn to understand him—yes, I am sure that my Muse is male. I gave it some thought and this is what came to me—my Muse is a male faery named Thorndrake. He is happy when I play music and his favorite music is Icelandic or Symphonic metal like Apocalyptica, Nightwish, Sirenia and Evanescence. He prefers female singers but also likes David Cook, one of the American Idol winners.

I am living with a Muse. Now I can talk about him as if he really exists. Hopefully, I won’t say anything that offends him or he will give me writer’s block. Maybe I should just keep my mouth shut and turn on some Nightwish.

Do any writers out there have a Muse? If so, what is he or she like?

Hi all,

and putting the answer in the message box. The contest runs to the end of May.
Good Luck!

Excerpt from The Enchanted Meadow:
She studied him, admiring the confident way he commanded his men even as he faced the unknown. He stood regal and powerful, the blue warrior marks he earned shadowing the austere planes of his handsome face. Long, golden-copper streaked hair plunged down his back in a wild tangle. She yearned to run her hands through his thick mane again.

As if reading her thoughts, he glanced back at her tree, his bright blue eyes darkening to a deeper hue in the shifting light, his face softening from its usual hardness. When he looked in her direction, he let slip his true feelings he hid from his warriors. Her heart sang with compassion for him.

She felt herself blush at his penetrating gaze. His eyes awakened that feeling of familiarity in her again, but she still could not place it. If she escaped her prison, she could go to him now.

Frowning, she thought how she hated the tree that felt like a tomb. The world beyond the tree taunted her with its bright autumn colors, a world so full of life and freedom. She could not bear to look upon it any longer.

To help her bide her time, she thought about their coupling. Her body flushed at the memory. She recalled how wonderful his muscles had felt beneath her touch and the way he had kissed her, caressing her secret places with his skillful tongue, making her moan and quake. A twinge of desire flickered inside her at the thought of having him touch her again tonight.

When they discovered another missing cow, they would have to stay. At least she hoped so. She continued to hide some of their cattle to keep the warrior there so eventually he could help her escape.

At first, she only wanted to use him to help her escape, but now her body trembled with affection for the golden warrior. After he rekindled what had been dormant for so long inside of her, she began to yearn for him and his tender, passionate touch. Could she let him go? And if he should eat of the apples….
