Excerpt snippet #3 Oct. 5

My senses prickled, the feeling that something was very wrong nagging at me. The strangeness of this place without cars and airplanes, the ninjas speaking an ancient language… I stiffened. Was it possible I’d traveled back in time? No, that was absurd.

Another thought hit me hard. My bandmates and I had recently learned that all five of us had true mates who shared our special gifts associated with our different rune tattoos. Kate, who wore the spirit world Journey rune, had found Kane, a Scottish movie star with faery blood. Cyn, marked with the Wolfsangel rune, had found Lucius, a werewolf, and Jessie, wearer of the Undead rune, had found Merrick, a half-human, half-vampire. Our powers didn’t grow until we met our mates, so either I’d unknowingly tapped into my rune gift for old languages, or my mate was here.

The same male who’d addressed me gave a short nod, and two of the ninjas seized my arms and yanked me forward.

“Hey, what are you doing?” I tried to struggle, but they were too strong.

Damn. If they were LARPing, they took it very seriously and didn’t break from their roles as they dragged me into the woods and out the other side. I gaped at the scene across the stone bridge. A palace and smaller structures built on top of pillars, all made of white stone like they’d been carved there by gods, were nestled beneath the high, rocky, grass-covered cliffs. Sparkling waterfalls flowed down beneath the cliff-side city and emptied into a river. Small trees adorned the landscape and added color to the gleaming white structures. Had I stepped into a fantasy novel?

I'm proud of her for her calm reaction. I'd be kind of apprehensive if I suddenly found myself in another time. I like to think I'd be all "I got this" but I don't know!!!
